Welcome to the Cameroonian Community in New Mexico

Showcasing the vibrant culture, professional talent, and community spirit of Cameroonians across the Land of Enchantment.

The Cameroonian community in New Mexico is a vibrant thread in the state’s multicultural fabric, often referred to as “Africa in miniature”, bringing an immense diversity of over 240 ethnic groups. This diaspora maintains a rich cultural tapestry through rhythmic drumming, traditional dances, and the preparation of authentic dishes like Koki, Achu, Ndole,”Kati-kati”, Eru etc. For many members, keeping these traditions alive in cities like Rio Rancho, Albuquerque and Santa Fe is a way to ensure that younger generations understand their roots while contributing to the multicultural landscape of their new home.
This group-oriented society operates on a deep sense of reciprocity and mutual support, viewing kinship as extending far beyond blood relatives. In New Mexico, this communal spirit is channeled through organized volunteer groups that actively seek to give back to the local neighborhoods that have welcomed them. By bridging the gap between their heritage and their current environment, they foster a unique community identity that prioritizes collective well-being and social integration.
One of the most visible examples of this commitment to service is the community’s adoption of Ragle Park in Santa Fe. Members of the Cameroonian Volunteer Group have dedicated countless hours to cleaning the park, pulling weeds, raking leaves, and even painting handicap parking spaces to improve accessibility. These efforts, highlighted by the City of Santa Fe, demonstrate a profound desire to “re-beautify” the state and provide a cleaner, safer space for all families to enjoy.
Beyond environmental stewardship, the community extends its compassion to the most vulnerable through social outreach, such as visiting orphanages and supporting youth in Albuquerque, they provide mentorship and emotional support to children in need. This “service-first” mentality ensures that the Cameroonian presence in New Mexico is defined not just by its heritage, but by its enduring impact on the lives of fellow New Mexicans.
